How To Compare Shops
Most RV repair advice skips the first question, which is whether the shop can physically do the work at all. Capability comes before quality, and it eliminates most options before price is even discussed.
Mobile technician versus body shop
Mobile RV technicians dominate the review counts in Orange County, and for good reason. For systems work, appliance faults, and seal maintenance, a good mobile tech is faster, cheaper, and comes to you.
What they cannot do is structural repair, frame straightening, panel replacement, or refinishing, because those require equipment that does not travel. If your problem is a leaking water heater, call a mobile tech. If it is a bent frame or a crushed cap, that is a shop job.
Dealer service versus independent specialist
Dealers are brand aligned and generally strongest on late model units of the brands they sell. They frequently sublet collision and paint work, which means your coach leaves their lot and goes somewhere you did not choose.
An independent specialist keeps it in one building. Ask any shop directly whether they sublet paint or structural work, because that answer tells you who is actually accountable for the result.
Network shop versus your own choice
A carrier network agreement is a rate and process arrangement between the shop and the insurer. It is a commercial deal, not a quality certification, and it does not obligate you.
Under California Insurance Code section 758.5 you choose your repair facility. On an RV that matters far more than on a car, because a network shop with no coach experience will underwrite your claim on automotive assumptions and miss most of the damage.
Questions worth asking any shop
These five separate shops quickly, and none of them are hostile questions.
What is your hourly labor rate?: If they will not tell you, you cannot audit any estimate they write.
Do you sublet paint or structural work?: Determines who is actually accountable when something is wrong.
Can you physically fit my vehicle?: Ask about bay depth, door height, and booth length specifically.
How do you handle supplements?: The right answer involves photographs at teardown, submitted before work proceeds.
Have you done this exact repair before?: Ask to see it. A shop that has will show you.
