Box Truck Collision and Body Repair

Box truck repair covers two structures: the cab, which is conventional collision work, and the box body, which is a bonded panel structure with its own failure modes. The collision shops physically inside Buena Park cap out below most box trucks, which is why owners drive out to us.

Why this fails in the first place

Before anything gets quoted we work out why the damage happened, because the repair is different depending on the cause. On straight trucks, box trucks, step vans, and cutaway box bodies, the same visible symptom can come from several different failures, and fixing the wrong one means the vehicle comes back.

Box bodies come in aluminum sheet and post, FRP composite, and hybrid construction. Aluminum panels are repairable by section and replacement. FRP composite panels are bonded structures and repairing them means restoring the bond to the internal framing, not just filling the outer surface, which is why a cosmetic composite repair delaminates within a year.

  • Overhead strikes: The most common box truck loss by a wide margin. Drive throughs, low bridges, and canopies. The roof rail takes the hit and the whole front header moves.

  • Corner impacts: Tight urban delivery. Rear and front box corners take repeated low speed contact until a corner post gives.

  • Roll up door damage: The door is used dozens of times a day. Track damage, panel damage, and spring failure are routine rather than exceptional.

  • Lift gate structural loading: Gate mounting concentrates load into the rear frame area, and over time it cracks the mounting structure rather than the gate.

  • Panel delamination on composite boxes: FRP composite panels lose their bond to the internal framing, usually starting at a seam that was breached in a minor impact.

What owners notice first

Most of the vehicles that arrive here from Buena Park have been showing one of these signs for months. Catching it at the first sign is usually the difference between a contained repair and a structural one.

  • Roll up door binds or will not seat: The opening is out of square, which means the box structure moved.

  • Daylight visible at a box seam: The seal path is open and the cargo area is no longer weather tight.

  • Cracking at the lift gate mount: Structural, not cosmetic. This gets worse under load and it carries a real failure risk.

  • Panel bulging or rippling: The panel has lost its bond to the framing behind it.

  • Water in the cargo area: A breached seam or a failed roof to sidewall joint. Cargo damage claims follow quickly.

Our repair sequence

Every job is written up before a tool comes out, photographed at each stage, and documented in a form an adjuster can read. Body and paint work is billed at $210 per hour and mechanical and electrical at $260 per hour, both posted publicly so you can check the math on any estimate we hand you.

  1. Assess cab and box separately. They are different structures with different repair methods, and quoting them as one number hides where the cost actually is.

  2. Measure the box opening. Door and opening squareness tells us whether the box structure moved or only the panel is damaged.

  3. Structural repair first. Corner posts, roof rails, and headers are repaired or replaced before any panel work, because panels rely on that framing.

  4. Panel repair or replacement. Aluminum and FRP composite panels repaired or replaced, with the bond to framing properly restored.

  5. Door and equipment service. Roll up doors, swing doors, and lift gates repaired or replaced and cycle tested.

  6. Refinish and remark. Refinished, fleet graphics reproduced, and DOT reflective tape and compliance marking reapplied.

Parts and materials that matter here

Box bodies come in aluminum sheet and post, FRP composite, and hybrid construction. Aluminum panels are repairable by section and replacement. FRP composite panels are bonded structures and repairing them means restoring the bond to the internal framing, not just filling the outer surface, which is why a cosmetic composite repair delaminates within a year.

Lift gates we service include Maxon, Tommy Gate, and Anthony. The gate itself is usually serviceable. The mount structure is where the actual damage tends to be, and that is a welded structural repair rated for the gate capacity, at $1,500 to $8,500 installed.

Why this comes back when it is done badly

The most common bad repair on a box truck is a cosmetic panel fix over a moved structure. The panel looks straight, the roll up door still binds, and six months later the corner post cracks again in the same place.

The second is filling FRP composite from the outside. It is a bonded panel, and surface filler over a delaminated area has nothing structural behind it. It cracks along the repair edge as soon as the box flexes.

The third is skipping the DOT reflective tape and compliance marking on reassembly. It is a small line item that turns into a roadside citation, and it is the kind of thing that gets forgotten when a shop does not work on commercial vehicles regularly.

How this works with your insurance claim

Box truck losses are commercial claims, and the largest variable is downtime cost rather than repair cost. We give a written schedule at authorization so a fleet can plan around it rather than calling weekly for a status.

Cargo damage from a breached box is often a separate coverage from the vehicle damage. We document the breach and the water path so both can be substantiated, because the cargo claim usually needs evidence the vehicle claim does not require.

We bill every major carrier direct, so you are not fronting the repair and waiting on a reimbursement. Under California Insurance Code section 758.5 your insurer cannot require you to use a particular shop. You pick the shop, they pay the claim.

Getting the work done from Buena Park

Our facility sits at 23281 La Palma Ave, Yorba Linda, CA 92887, roughly 13 miles and about 20 minutes from Buena Park using the 91 and the 5. All work is performed here in the 35,000 square foot shop, where we have the frame equipment, the lift capacity, and the paint booth. We do not run route service, because this work cannot be done properly in a driveway.

A written estimate is $150 and is credited against the repair once you authorize it. Bring the vehicle in, or call (714) 909-1444 and we will tell you what to expect before you drive out.

Frequently asked questions

The body shops in Buena Park said my box truck is too heavy. Can you take it?

Yes. The collision shops inside Buena Park city limits are set up for light vehicles and at least one publicly caps at 3.5 tonnes, which excludes most box trucks. We are roughly 13 miles out on the 91 and medium duty chassis are routine work here.

How much does box truck body repair cost?

Box and cargo body repair runs about $750 to $15,000 at five to 80 shop hours. Cab body repair runs $750 to $12,000. A full collision repair with refinish spans $1,500 to $50,000 and up. Roll up door service is $400 to $4,500 and lift gate work is $1,500 to $8,500.

Can you repair an FRP composite box panel, or does it need replacing?

Both are possible. If the bond to the internal framing is intact and the damage is contained, it is repairable. If the panel has delaminated from the framing, surface repair has nothing structural behind it and it will crack along the repair edge, so the panel section gets replaced.

Do you reapply DOT compliance marking after a repair?

Yes, as a standard line item. Reflective tape and compliance marking run $250 to $1,200. It gets forgotten by shops that do not see commercial vehicles often, and it turns into a roadside citation on the first inspection after the repair.

Do you work directly with my insurance company?

Yes. We bill every major carrier direct, including Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, AAA SoCal, Mercury, Allstate, Wawanesa, National General, Foremost, Liberty Mutual, Good Sam, and The Hartford. We write the estimate, photograph the damage, submit supplements when hidden damage turns up, and deal with the adjuster so you do not have to.

What does an estimate cost?

A written estimate is $150 and it is credited back against the repair once you authorize the work. An in depth diagnostic is $285 for the first hour and is credited the same way. We charge for estimates because a proper one takes real shop time, and that keeps our schedule filled with actual repairs.

Do you come out to Buena Park, or does the vehicle need to come to you?

The vehicle comes to us. Everything happens in shop at 23281 La Palma Ave, Yorba Linda, CA 92887, about 13 miles from Buena Park on the 91 and the 5. We do not run route service. Frame work, structural repair, and refinishing need the equipment and the booth, and nobody can do that job correctly in a parking lot.

What are your posted labor rates?

Body and paint is $210 per hour, mechanical and electrical is $260 per hour, diagnostics and programming is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, and detail is $95 per hour. Paint supplies bill at $55 per paint hour and body supplies at $5 per body hour. Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials. Labor is not taxed.
