Frame straightening is pulling a bent or twisted chassis back to published factory dimensions on a measuring system. It is diagnosed by measurement, never by eye. A frame left out of spec causes tire wear, slide binding, door misalignment, and leaks that no amount of body work will resolve.
Why this fails in the first place
Before anything gets quoted we work out why the damage happened, because the repair is different depending on the cause. On Class A motorhomes, fifth wheels, box trucks, and commercial chassis, the same visible symptom can come from several different failures, and fixing the wrong one means the vehicle comes back.
RV and truck chassis are almost universally steel ladder frames, either C channel or boxed section, with crossmembers at load points. Van based chassis such as Sprinter, Transit, and ProMaster are unibody and are measured and pulled differently, on a bench rather than as a ladder frame.
Direct impact: A collision that loaded the rails past yield. The rail stays where the impact put it, and the rest of the structure sits on top of that error.
Jackknife loading: Common on fifth wheels. The pin box loads the frame in a direction it was never designed for, and it twists rather than bending cleanly.
Overloading and long term sag: Years above rated weight, especially with a heavy rear overhang, sets a permanent bow into the rails.
Improper jacking: Lifting a coach on the rails at an unsupported point puts a local kink in the flange that shows up as a body gap forty feet away.
Corrosion at a stress point: A rail that has thinned from rust loses section and bends under loads it used to carry, which is why we measure and inspect rather than just pull.
What owners notice first
Most of the vehicles that arrive here from Buena Park have been showing one of these signs for months. Catching it at the first sign is usually the difference between a contained repair and a structural one.
Uneven or accelerated tire wear: A twisted frame changes axle geometry, and the tires record it before anything else does.
Vehicle dog tracks: The rear axle does not follow the front. You see it in a mirror or from a following vehicle.
Slide binds on one corner: The opening is no longer square, which loads the mechanism unevenly and strips gears.
Doors and compartments no longer latch: A structure that has moved carries its openings with it, and latches are the most sensitive indicator.
Tapering body gaps: A gap that is wide at one end and tight at the other, especially along the sidewall, points at the frame rather than at the panel.
Our repair sequence
Every job is written up before a tool comes out, photographed at each stage, and documented in a form an adjuster can read. Body and paint work is billed at $210 per hour and mechanical and electrical at $260 per hour, both posted publicly so you can check the math on any estimate we hand you.
Full measurement first. The chassis is measured against published factory dimensions before anything is pulled, so we know the actual error rather than guessing at it.
Inspect for corrosion and prior repair. We look for thinned sections and previous plating. A rail that has been plated over is weaker than an unrepaired one and it pulls unpredictably.
Anchor and pull. The vehicle is anchored and the correction applied in controlled stages, remeasuring between each stage rather than pulling to a target in one go.
Section and replace where required. Where a rail is cracked, torn, or too far gone to pull, the damaged section is cut out and replaced rather than plated over.
Remeasure and document. Final dimensions are recorded and photographed. You get the before and after numbers, and so does your carrier.
Realign the systems on top. Suspension geometry, slide openings, and body gaps are checked and corrected once the frame is back in spec.
Parts and materials that matter here

Where sectioning is required we follow the chassis manufacturer's published repair procedure for cut location and joint design, because a splice in the wrong place on a rail creates a new stress riser. That procedure is what separates a structural repair from a weld that will crack in two years.
Why this comes back when it is done badly
The largest single mistake is plating over a bend instead of correcting it. A plate adds stiffness at one spot, which moves the flex to the edge of the plate and cracks it there. It also permanently hides the original damage from any future inspection.
The second is heating the rail to make it pull easier. Heat above the steel's tempering range permanently reduces the strength of the rail, and the vehicle leaves with a frame that measures correctly and is materially weaker than it was.
The third is straightening the frame and stopping. The frame carries a body, a set of slide openings, and a suspension, and all three need to be checked and reset after a pull or the symptoms persist.
How this works with your insurance claim
Frame damage from a collision is a covered loss on any policy with collision coverage, and it is one of the most commonly under written items on an initial estimate because it is not visible in the intake photographs.
We measure at intake and submit the measurements as a supplement with the damage report. Numbers against published factory specification are difficult for an adjuster to dispute, which is the entire point of measuring before quoting.
We bill every major carrier direct, so you are not fronting the repair and waiting on a reimbursement. Under California Insurance Code section 758.5 your insurer cannot require you to use a particular shop. You pick the shop, they pay the claim.
